Historic Portfolio (add-on module)

This provides the ability to store the holdings history of a portfolio. It includes being able to demonstrate on a chart the "value-added" of switching decisions that have been taken.

Note: You can add "dead" funds to your historic portfolios. To do this, simply use our advanced search for the fund in the portfolio screen with any details you know (like a Citicode, SEDOL code, ISIN code or even name).

You will need to then select the "all universes" option and select the appropriate fund from the selection.

Creating a historic portfolio

After creating a portfolio in the normal way, you have the option to convert it into an historic portfolio.

To do this you will need to click on the tab above the portfolio contents to convert the portfolio into an historic portfolio or, alternatively, choose New Historical Entry from the Options menu.

Once you have clicked this tab, you will be asked to enter a creation date for this portfolio. Once you are happy, click on the "OK" button and you will then have the option to name your portfolio.

Once saved you will see that the dates that you have held this portfolio for are displayed in blue writing under the name of your portfolio. You also now have the option to create additional historical entries to this portfolio.

More importantly, now that you have applied a start date to your portfolio, you can see the drift that has occurred to your portfolio, and see what your actual weightings right now are. You can see that my original weightings of 25% in each fund, has moved on some fund by almost 5% in just over a year.

You can add or remove funds or simply even change the weightings of your existing funds. Once happy with the changes simply click on the "additional historic entry" tab and enter a new entry date for these changes and click on the OK button.

Now that there is more than one portfolio linked to this client, you will notice that you have tabs that you can switch between to represent your client's portfolio position through time.

Note: Your "Current" tab will update to represent the weightings drift on your new instruments and dates.

You can add in as many historical dates as you wish. Once you have more than 5 dates a tab list will appear so that you can jump between historical entries quickly.

By clicking on this tab list, a pop-up will appear with all the historic entries for the portfolio and you can quickly navigate to the relevant one that you require via a click on your mouse.

Editing an historic portfolio

To edit a portfolio as you may have made a mistake simply click on the relevant tab that you wish to edit, make the necessary changes and click on the save button in order to successfully make your change.

If you made a mistake with the date of an entry, simply double click on the relevant tab in your portfolio and adjust your date accordingly.

Deleting an historic portfolio

There are a number of ways you can delete an historic portfolio

  • Choose the Delete Portfolio from the File menu
  • Via the File Manager located on the Menu Bar.

To only delete an historical entry in your portfolio, simply select the relevant historical entry and choose the Delete Historical Entry from the Options menu.

Charting your historic linked portfolios

Add the portfolio to your active list and chart your portfolio as normal.

The name in the chart replicates the latest change that you have made to this portfolio and the performance percentage represents the total portfolio growth over your selected time period.

You will also see that you have squares on the line chart at various points to represent where you made changes to your portfolio over time.

.

Choose Chart Options from the Options menu in the chart and you will have the following functions:

  • turn off the squares that represent your portfolio changes in the line chart or you could
  • show the affect of the changes that you have made via branch offs from your line chart
  • change the colour of the lines that appear on the chart

The ledger will now update to show your different portfolio branch offs.

This will now show you what would have happened if you never changed your portfolio holdings and weightings and hopefully show the value that you have added by making changes to your portfolio.

Portfolio Holdings Summary

You can view a summary table of your historic entries by choosing Historical Holdings Summary from the Reports menu. The table will contain all holdings that have been members of the portfolio over the portfolio history and the holding percentages for each historical entry. The holdings will be ordered by the total percentage weighting over the life of the portfolio.

You can also export the table as a CSV and XLS file.
